ANATOMY OF 4 PAINTINGS; an exercise in automatism
I started this project in May/June of 2007 as a means to study how automatism and my process strategies were actually working or not working. I can never remember what happened during a studio sesssion. So I deliberately sat down at the end of a paintng sesssion and wrote out my idea notes and remeberances as best I could remmember them at the moment. To wait until the next day, I would forget nuances of emotion or technical useage. As I continue to study these pages and images, I am pleased as well as convinced that my set of automatist strategies and processes are working. I am travelling places while I work that I don't think I would have ventured if not for relying on automatism to operate as a major influence behind my working process. In the past I would use automatism to offer an idea for further work on a painting, but I would intellectually and consciously dismiss the idea as not workable. Why? Laziness some of the time becasue the new first solution move/idea might require some long moments of preparation. I would dismiss the idea as not being true to automatist doctorine. Then procrastination would set in and no work on the painting would take place. I suffered from this procedure for many, many years. I have no solid answer as to why I would allow this to go on for so long a time period. Also procrastinatin itself would eat at my mind and I would fall into the vat of indicision which usually left me angry and unable to continue working on the painting.I offer these four new paintings for your study and enjoyment. Comments are welcome as I can use all the help I can get. Click on the links below to view each set of paintigs. Each page will load in a new window.painting 1 painting 2 painting 3 painting 4 |
